Chisholm Trail....

...Texas to Kansas it ran with cowboys and cattle and all,
tough ride to herd those cattle, did they sing "Cattle Call?"
Portrayed in movies and later TV,
those cowboys must have been something to see.

Right after the Civil War, steers sold up north for forty dollars a head,
but down in Texas, times were tough, a four dollar price meant that living was dead.
So Mr. Chisholm wanted the railroad to come down to the south,
and created the trail instead, news travel by word of mouth.

There ain't much there, he said without so much as a grin,
you could tell he knew just from the tobacco juice on his chin;
bunch of old critters and some poisonous snakes is it,
why they ain't even no water, it's so dry a man can't spit.

There ain't a lot of company in there, it's just you,
not even a place where a man can buy chew;
so go in there with them snakes and horned frogs if you will,
at least when it's bedtime it's quiet and still.

Well this is my hand at pure fiction today,
it's good this old geezer didn't have much to say;
try something different, some different style,
or just go back to my old ways, after a while.

...Texas, if you like beaches and sand dunes and surf,
we might be approaching your favorite place on earth,
it's where they let turtles hatch, and have camping on a beach,
and it's not too far away, it's within an easy reach.

Cooled by Gulf breezes, or heated by the sun,
if you love those white sand beaches, this may be the one;
roam around the sand dunes, or sun bathe if you must,
you'd really like it here, if...my words you trust.
